Important Note:
It is not advisable to go for a trek into the National Park of Chapada Diamantina on your own. It can be very difficult to orientate yourself – Some parts of the trails get overgrown by the vegetation easily and there are no signposts or accurate maps available.
Trekking into the Capão Valley "advanced"
We will start our hike straight from Lençóis, passing the water purification place of the town before we reach the beginning of the trail. The hike continues going steep uphill following the ancient trails which has been used since the diamond boom. We leave the area of the city quickly behind us and will have soon a great view watching back. We cross little rivers, pass a small waterfall at the grisante and follow the trail which is the shortest connection into the Capão valley. The landscape changes dramatically in some parts of the trail – the flora and fauna is very diverse and we even pass through a part of Atlantic rain forest. This day is perfect to encounter all types of bromeliads, orchids and lizards. At the top of the hill chain, we observe the breathtaking views of the valley with an extensive, largely intact ecosystem – we have ascended 500 meters. The trail continues through high grown bush lands with spectacular colors all around you. In the distance we start to see the Morrão – the highest peak of the northern Chapada Diamantina and a majestic symbol of the Capão valley. Until now winds and water still continue shaping this drum like looking flat table mountain. Far away from civilization a truely authentic Chapada Diamantina scenery. Our trail will pass this landmark nearby while we are following the plateau leading us to the Capão village. A little before the village we will be picked by our driver and have the choice to take a refreshing swim at the Riachinho waterfall or visit the small, alternative hippie village – Capão. Street artists create a wonderful atmosphere here, there many options to try regional specialties in simple restaurants and food stalls. Almost everything is produced organically. In the evening we will drive back to Lençóis.
